Wolf, Wyoming
September 2020
Eatons’ Ranch is the oldest dude ranch in America and has about 7,000 acres of beautiful land. It is only about 30 minutes East of Sheridan, Wyoming. My friend, Holly, who I mention a lot during this stay was a wrangler the Eaton’s at the time.
My Time at Eatons’ Ranch
Day One
I checked in with the friendliest staff and they showed me to my cabin. I stayed in Hell’s Kitchen which was a one bedroom cabin that overlooked a small creek. It was shortly time for dinner. The chef baked delicious chicken and baked beans. That night, I joined Holly and some of her coworkers as they went into Sheridan to go to a couple bars. We visited The Mint, The Rainbow, and Beaver Creek. Beers were had, pool was played, and memories were made.
Day Two
This morning, I was woken up by the birds chirping outside my windows. The breakfast bell rang. I enjoyed chocolate chip pancakes and some bacon. After that, I got fitted for my saddle and assigned a horse for my stay. His name was Inkspot because he had a small black dot on his hip. Holly took us up to Chocolate Drop, where the view was absolutely beautiful. We then attempted to go through Jungle Trail but there was a tree down. We made it back for lunch and had French Dip with some tater tots. After lunch, Holly and I went on a hike with her dog, Ava. She took me up North Red, about a mile and a half. I even found a deer shed to bring home for dad. It was very exhausting but worth every drip of sweat. Dinner included brisket with vegetables and potatoes.
Day Three
This morning, there was a breakfast buffet that included pancakes, eggs, bacon, and fruit. We adventured back up North Red, but this time on a horse – so much easier! We traveled from North Red to the badlands. We were able to hear some bugling from elk. We searched and searched. Finally, we stumbled upon TWO herds of elk. On the way back to the ranch, I found a small rattlesnake but he was too quick for me to snap a picture. Lunch consisted of chicken tenders and fries (one of my favorite meals). That afternoon, I was able to go fly-fishing with Worthley. I had never gone before but was able to learn pretty quickly. I recommend it to everyone! We traveled up to Wolf Creek and I caught two trout. I hiked back down to the ranch, hoping to find a bear but I never did see one. Dinner was a beef tenderloin with potatoes. That evening, Holly took me back to Sheridan and we went to Black Tooth Brewery.
Day Four
I had the pleasure of joining the team for early morning wrangling. I rode Wiggins, a beautiful roan horse. I have never trotted or cantered on a horse before, so this was very challenging for me. I was able to hold on tight and never fell off! Breakfast was French toast, eggs, bacon and fruit. We then traveled to South Red Canyon, Windy Canyon, and back over to Chocolate Drop. This was a Tuesday, so of course we had tacos for lunch. For the afternoon ride, we adventured to Alden Trail, up to Domos, and back down Racetrack trail. For my last dinner, I had a delicious pork tenderloin with rolls and an Oreo cake for dessert.
Day Five
This was a sad day as it was check out day. We were able to squeeze in one last ride. Holly took me up to Indian Rocks and took our time coming back. It was then time to say goodbye.
